What causes desiccant performance to degrade?

Factors that affect desiccant performance include:

  1. Buildup of carbon, polymeric substances and compounds (clogging of desiccant pores)
  2. Partial loss of desiccant pores due to attrition
  3. Destruction of crystalline pores due to chemical reaction

Normal wear on the desiccant bed in a compressed air dehumidifying equipment is due mostly to buildup on the surface of the desiccant particles. Carbon and polymeric substances contained in the compressed air may cover or clog desiccant pores, causing a loss of adsorption capacity.
